FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS MEDICAL MASSAGE?
Massage Therapy is like playing guitar. Everyone learns the same chords, scales and fingering but after learning the basics, the individual chooses their focus, whether it be jazz, blues, classical or rock.
All LMTs in NYS pass the same boards, then they choose their focus: relaxation, cranial sacral, spa, sports, beauty, chair, travel, etc.
I excelled at restoring function and pain relief so I did continuing education in medical massage.
WHAT IS TARGETED MASSAGE?
An example: A woman came here after having pain in her hands for 2 years.
I worked a half hour on one thumb, and a half hour on the other thumb.
She slept through it, woke relaxed and refreshed, and now, a year later, she still has no pain.
This sort of targeted treatment is perfect for chronic pain, acute pain or after surgery.
Click here to see the video of Dr. Liz's hour neck treatment to experience the client's joy and relief.
WHY IS POST-SURGICAL CARE IMPORTANT?
Surgery, or other trauma such as a car accident, twisted ankle, or broken bone, leads to restrictions in the fascial tissue. Over time, this will cause sharp pain, aches and restricted movement. Did you know that your 20 year old laparoscopic surgery can cause restrictions in the abdomen even though no scar is visible?
Watch this video of a post-op session to see the results that one hour of targeted therapy can make.
DO YOU OFFER ANY FULL-BODY TREATMENT?
Yes, the Body and Soul session is something offered nowhere else.
It is an extremely relaxing way to address all the meridians of the body.
You can wear soft clothing, your birthday suit or your bathing suit.
Note: This session is not combined with medical/therapeutic massage.
CLOTHING AND COVERAGE
What you cover at the beach will be covered during your massage with sheets or clothing.
You may also wear soft fabrics: pajamas, bike shorts, yoga pants, tank top, T-shirt or bathing suit.
Keep in mind the muscles that need to be accessed when you are choosing your attire.
Put long hair in a top knot and remove jewelry for optimal comfort.
SURGERY AND RECENT INJURY
Post-surgical care is essential for a full recovery. When you're cleared for post-opt care, schedule a visit and we will really get things moving. Watch a video of post-surgical restoration HERE.
If you just had an injury (break, tear, swelling), and want some relief, call to schedule a hands-free Life Force Healing session. It works! Here is a review of a 30 minute treatment:
"I had energetic healing work done on my torn rotator cuff and had immediate improved range of motion and overall sense of well-being. Bleu was kind and knowledgeable. A very positive experience! - Amy"
LIFEFORCE ENERGY HEALING
Energy healing works on the ethereal bodies just as massage therapy works on the physical body.
I use what I call Lifeforce Healing, a combination of Shiatsu, Vibratory Healing and Pranic Healing, which a client aptly named "Reiki on Steroids". Energy healing is one of the modalities integrated into each massage session.
Find out more HERE and HERE. You can read the reviews HERE.
AFTER-CARE
After your session, I may suggest movements, postural changes, strengthening or stretches to further your goals.
You will progress faster if you participate in your healing journey by doing the homework.
Think of it this way, aren't your teeth better off if, in addition to regular dental cleanings, you also brush daily?
Full benefit of therapy will become apparent one or two days after your session.
Increased intake of water before and after therapeutic massage is highly recommended (avoid alcohol and caffeine because they are dehydrating).
Sometimes the addressed muscles feel a little uncomfortable the next day just as they would after a gym workout. Take a hot shower, an Epsom soak, an Acetaminophen or do the homework I recommended.
MAINTENANCE
Once your goal has been reached, you may want to consider a maintenance plan. Just like with a car, routine maintenance prevents troubles that can lead to a break down. If you have an older "vehicle", regular care is even more essential to keep it running well. Maintenance, in the very least, would be incorporating the exercises, stretches and postural changes into your daily life, but may require an occasional 'tune-up' at my shop.
THE BIG PICTURE
You will feel better after one massage but unless this is very recent issue then troubles have generally been building up for a long time, undetected, and many muscle groups have gotten involved. Sometimes one session is enough to ensure the problem does not return. Sometimes it takes a couple of sessions close together to make the changes "stick".
If you have been living with this for a long time, a series of sessions in addition to homework may be necessary to re-educate the muscles fully. Muscles form habits and these habits are what are causing your pain. Re-education means breaking those habitual patterns and creating a new paradigm.
Think of it this way, if your car is late with routine maintenance, and you've been ignoring the squeal when applying the brakes, you will expect that what started out as the need for new brake pads is now also new rotors and the caliper is locked up. You are not surprised that the repairs take longer, right? And if your car has lots of mileage, routine maintenance becomes increasingly essential, as more things will be in need of repair. It is the same when a body which has a few "extra miles" on it.
If symptoms return, please take a moment to note the day and what you were doing at the time.
Examples: 4 days later after a really long car ride, 2 weeks later first thing in the morning, 1 month later during finals week. This helps develop an effective care plan for your next session, exercises, stretches and postural correction.
MEDICARE REIMBURSEMENT
Therapeutic massage furnished by a state licensed professional, ordered by a physician or medical professional, is part of the non-opiod pain management options accepted by the Medicare Advantage program. My office does not accept Medicare as payment but I will provide you with a receipt for reimbursement if requested.
